In response to concerns about spam calls and cyber frauds, Telecom Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has emphasized the importance of citizens not picking up calls from unknown numbers. He requested every individual to respond to calls only from numbers they recognize.

According to the Telecom Minister, individuals should only respond to calls from unknown numbers if an identification message is received from the callers.
Minister: Ministry’s Measures Reduce Spam Calls and Cyber Frauds
The Telecom Minister stated that the ministry has implemented various measures that have effectively reduced the number of spam calls and instances of cyber fraud. He mentioned the recent launch of the ‘Sanchar Saathi’ portal as part of these efforts. Furthermore, more than 4 million incorrect SIMs and 41,000 unauthorized “points of sale” agents have been blacklisted, the minister added.
Surge in Spam Calls on WhatsApp Reported by Indian Users
In recent months, there has been a notable increase in spam calls, particularly on the instant messaging platform WhatsApp. Users in India have witnessed a substantial rise in incoming international spam calls, which include both voice and video calls. To combat scam calls and fraud, WhatsApp, owned by Meta, has taken action by blocking approximately 3.6 million mobile connections.
WhatsApp Boosts AI and ML Systems to Reduce Fake Call Incidents
WhatsApp has recently announced that it has strengthened its artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) systems to effectively combat fake call incidents. The company spokesperson stated that their enhanced enforcement measures would result in a minimum 50% reduction in the current calling rate. They reassured users that their continuous efforts aim to ensure a safe experience for everyone on the platform.
